1. Special Education

Department of Special Education, an integral part of Composite Regional Center- Shillong, providing special educational services to all children with special needs and generating manpower in the field of special education. The department works very closely with other departments of the Centre and contributing the best as possible to achieve the established objectives of Centre, as a nodal agency for the holistic development of persons with disabilities, their family and the field of disability rehabilitation.

Special education services

The special education programme of the department works closely with teachers, parents, siblings and other family members to identify and support children with special needs ages 3 to 18.   In order to ensure a holistic development of the all children, the department works collaboratively with other departments of the Centre; clinical psychology, physiotherapy, social work, vocational training and mobility & orientation.

Mode of services
The modes adopted to impart the special education services are individualized Education Programme (IEP), Individualized Family Support Programme (IFSP), Group therapy and Parental counseling.

Children eligible for special education services
A child with a disability is eligible for special education and related services.  This term includes a child who is evaluated and determined to have:

2. Clinical Psychology

The Department of Clinical Psychology at CRC- Shillong is involved in the Clinical and Teaching activities related to disability and mental health.

The Department is actively involved in the service of Children with Special needs, Mentally ill and for others who require guidance and counseling. Department is providing services such as psycho-diagnosis and psychotherapeutics to its clients. Department is well equipped with tests, tools and instruments.

3. Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is concerned with identifying and maximizing quality of life and movement potential within the spheres of promotion, prevention, treatment/intervention, and rehabilitation.

Physiotherapy provides services to individuals and populations to develop maintain and restore maximum movement and functional ability throughout the lifespan, when movement and function are threatened by disorders, conditions, injury, diseases, ageing, or environmental factors.

4. Rehabilitation Unit

Rehabilitation Unit connects the clients with all departments of the institute and works with a strong desire to help and improve the quality of life of people. Rehabilitation services are coordinated by Department of Social Work through centre based and outreach programmes.

Case History Taking

Taking Case History enables the professional to communicate with the patient about his/her symptoms, feelings and fears so as to obtain an insight into the nature of clients present and past illness. The purpose of history taking and interview is to elicit sufficient information to establish a diagnosis, assess relevant biological, psychological and social factors that are pertinent to the client and presenting conditions and formulate the range of specific therapeutic intervention. Hence the method of history taking is of great importance in the field of multiple disabilities.

Once the case history is collected, then the client will be referred to other departments for specific assessment and intervention. Apart from regular services, CRC- Shillong also conducts special outreach activities for PwDs and placement for job and educational opportunities.

5. Vocational Training and Rehabilitation Unit

The department functions with the objectives of providing adequate support for adults with multiple disabilities to lead an independent life. The service includes assessment and vocational guidance and various skill training and vocational training programmes for the adult's with multiple disabilities. In addition to this, concept of empowering the family members introduced, by conducting Income Generation Programme for the economic independence and better quality of life.

6. Orientation and Mobility Unit

Orientation and Mobility is a unit to rehabilitate person who is Visually Impaired to be independent in mobilizing in the social world as well as to rehabilitate them to be literate in academic and other entrepreneurship skills for a bright future in a dignified way of life.
